A solid zinc layer (zinc dross) is skimmed from the surface of the zinc pot in the coating process. Dross is removed because it might cause the surface defects on the coating and the poorer corrosion characteristics.
Our zinc dross is produced at the Hämeenlinna zinc coated plant with very high zinc content (> 98%). It is used for alloys. Zinc oxide made from zinc dross is used in the vulcanization of tires and paints. Zinc dross can be recycled in the galvanizing process if the amount of iron is not critical to the coating. Similarly, the zinc plant is able to use this material by feeding it directly into the melting furnace.
